Zusammenfassung:Highlights • We undertake the first meta-analysis of studies examining morning cortisol levels in SZ or BD, compared to controls, and to each other. • We examine potential clinical and demographic moderators of effect sizes. • Meta-analysis 2613 schizophrenia and 704 bipolar disorder cases reveal moderate quality evidence of increased morning cortisol levels in both groups compared to controls. • Greater effect sizes in schizophrenia samples were revealed in established illness, cases free of medication, and inpatient. • In BD, greater morning cortisol levels were found in outpatient and non-manic participants.
