Effect of the decreased volume of intake air on performance characteristics of small-sized diesel engine

An experiment was conducted to clarify the performance characteristics of a small-sized diesel engine with four-stroke-cycle in which the volume of intake air was decreased. Volume of intake air is said to be one of the elements which have an influence on the performance characteristics of an engine. The performance characteristics of the engine in this experiment were compared with those of an engine supplied with gas oil under the standard conditions of atmosphere. When the volume on intake air was decreased, the firing and combustion of the fuel oil were out of condition. In consequence, the consumption rate of fuel oil increased, maximum pressure of the cylinder was lowered, the temperature of the exhaust gas raised, and the color of the smoke became darker.
