Zusammenfassung:This work aims to discuss continuity through the analysis of a series of castles, those of Sacuidic, Cuol di Ciastiel (Forni di Sopra), Pra di Got (Forni di Sotto) and Cjastelat (Ampezzo), which are located in Carnia and have been the subject of archaeological investigation for many years by the Ca' Foscari University in Venice. The chronological range of these settlements varies between the fourth/fifth century and the end of the 13th/start of the 14th century--a period of time, therefore, that allows for a more complete discussion of the origins, the roles, and the meaning of these fortified structures in relation with the rural population. This long span of time in a well-defined geographical area (in this case the upper Tagliamento valley) was the paradigm used to test the validity of some of the models used most frequently to explain the function of the Friuli castle.
