Relationship between sperm competition and copulation duration in the Mediterranean fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Zusammenfassung: | Newly identified genetic markers in the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), have been employed to analyze sperm use in multiple-mated females. The sperm of second mating males predominates over that of the initial male in offspring from multiple-mated females. These results are significant for the basic study of the evolution of mating behavior, and for such applied research as the sterile insect release method for field control. |
