Salinity tolerance, development rates and predation capabilities of Sulcanus conflictus nicholls (copepoda: Calanoida)

Probit analysis gave upper and lower 48 hour-LC 50 values for salinity of 33·8 and 1·7‰ at 10°C, and 27·2 and 1·5 at 18°C. Sulcanus was reared through a complete life cycle under constant temperatures of 10, 18 and 25 °C. Embryonic and post-embryonic development of Sulcanus is shown to be strongly t...

Zusammenfassung:Probit analysis gave upper and lower 48 hour-LC 50 values for salinity of 33·8 and 1·7‰ at 10°C, and 27·2 and 1·5 at 18°C. Sulcanus was reared through a complete life cycle under constant temperatures of 10, 18 and 25 °C. Embryonic and post-embryonic development of Sulcanus is shown to be strongly temperature dependent. This is further supported by field observations. Significantly higher predation rates were observed on Gladioferens nauplii than on conspecific nauplii. After metamorphosis to the copepodite, susceptibility to predation by Sulcanus was decreased.
