Zusammenfassung:The range, composition, and status of longleaf pine communities in the West Gulf Coastal Plain are discussed. The Longleaf Pine Savannas Section is defined, and its climate, natural processes, geology, and floristic affinities are discussed. The major longleaf pine communities of this section—upland longleaf pine savanna and wetland longleaf pine savanna—are described in relation to physical environment, floristic composition, dynamics, range, and status. Four subtypes of upland longleaf pine savanna and three communities that occur as inclusions within this type (hillside seepage herb bogs/seepage slopes, semi-evergreen broadleaf acid seep forest, and Catahoula barrens) are defined and described. Three subtypes of wetland longleaf pine savanna and two included communities (flatwoods ponds and upland depression swamps) are also defined and described.
