Annual variation of phytoplankton in the Cartagena Bay.

The phytoplankton composition and its relationship to biomass values in respect to variations of the annual period were studied in Cartagena Bay during 1980. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the diatoms, dinoflagellates, and the chlorophyll "a" concentration were considered as biomass indicators. Seven samples were made during the year in 16 stations with reference points between bay and oceanic water. Results indicated that Cartagena Bay's phytoplankton consisted of tropical species in neritic waters. The behavior and distribution were subjected to meteorological conditions and to the coastal influence.
