Molecular details of Escherichia coli EII super(mtl) catalyzed mannitol transport and phosphorylation

The mannitol carrier, II super(mtl), was the first of this class of transport proteins to be purified and sequenced. It is a single peptide chain of 67,893 Da which consists of two separate, approximately equally-sized domains. The N-terminal half is embedded in the membrane. The C-terminal half protrudes into the cytoplasm and is characteristic of a globular, soluble protein. In contrast to most EII species, II super(mtl) does not operate with a separate EIII; it receives its phosphoryl group directly from P-HPr.
