Liposome fusion on proteinaceous S-layer lattices triggered via [small beta]-diketone ligand-europium(iii) complex formation

The present study describes a method for generating solid supported lipid membranes. Liposomes containing [small beta]-diketone ligands were chemically bound to crystalline surface (S-) layer proteins which entirely covered the gold sensors. These ligands formed complexes with added europium(iii) ions and triggered fusion/rupture of the liposomes resulting in planar supported lipid bilayers.
