Effects of water hardness and salinity on the acute toxicity and uptake of fenvalerate by bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus)

The influence of water hardness (6, 36, 156 and 309 mg calcium carbonate per litre) and salinity (12.5, 25, 33 and 40 per thousand) on the acute toxicity of the pyrethroid insecticide fenvalerate to bluegill were studied. Fenvalerate was the least toxic in the softest water (6 mg calcium carbonate p...

Zusammenfassung:The influence of water hardness (6, 36, 156 and 309 mg calcium carbonate per litre) and salinity (12.5, 25, 33 and 40 per thousand) on the acute toxicity of the pyrethroid insecticide fenvalerate to bluegill were studied. Fenvalerate was the least toxic in the softest water (6 mg calcium carbonate per litre). Uptake was not affected by hardness. Toxicity increased with salinity possibly due to lower levels of osmoregulatory enzymes present and their inhibition by fenvalerate.
