Larval Development of Balanus Amphitrite Darwin and Balanus Variegatus Darwin (Cirripedia, Balanidae) From New South Wales, Australia

Among the Balanus amphitrite varieties grouped together by Henry & McLaughlin (1975) into the single species B. amphitrite Darwin, four have been the subject of larval descriptions: B. a. amphitrite from Florida, Brazil, India and South Carolina, B. a. communis Darwin from India, B. a. denticulata Broch from South Africa and North Carolina and B. a. hawaiiensis Broch from Japan. The descriptions vary considerably in details of morphology and limb setation, although the setal variations may be due in part to different methods of depicting setal formulae.
