Zusammenfassung: | Few notions aspire to reach the condition of urban life and experience as that of 'urbanity' -- and perhaps no one has done so more imprecisely. Departing from usual focus on the spatial conditions of urbanity, the paper brings a potentially fresher approach which draws from disciplines still largely unrelated: philosophy and urban studies. A series of concepts of urbanity unfold as we explore the experiential, communicative and ontological conditions of urbanity as a lively fabric of relations of actors, acts and spaces. The approach shows the fabric of urbanity cut across by an ethos inherent to forms of life open to an unbounded communication, and aims at a definition which would allow us to get reconnected with the common sense notion: urbanity as the ethos of an open coexistence, the orientation to the Other and the becoming of the urban.
