Zusammenfassung: | The European Community should retain fusion as a high priority in its R&D plans. A stepwise strategy toward a prototype reactor should include, after the Joint European Torus (JET), an experimental reactor and a demonstration system. The life of JET should be extended to 1996, with tritium operation in the last two years. The region should also express its full commitment to the Intl Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) concept, together with preference for a widely based ITER program rather than an agreement for a single device. Organization and management of the European fusion effort will need to change as the program becomes more international and its industrial implications become more significant. |
