Ekman pumping velocity in the Arabian Sea during MONEX 1979

Daily variations of vertical velocity at the bottom of surface mixed layer at the centres of two stationary polygons and zonal wind stress component over Arabian Sea during MONEX 1979 are studied using marine meteorological parameters obtained from MONEX data set. The values of zonal wind stress are in agreement with earlier reports, although some values observed in polygon II exceed the normal. This is attributed to the intensification of low level wind field prior to the onset vortex. Values of Ekman pumping velocity at the centre of polygon I differ from previous results. The strong positive values observed during onset phase (polygon II) are in fair agreement with the earlier reports and this can be attributed to the presence of strong monsoon westerlies over the Arabian Sea during this phase.
