Acute toxicity of trichloroethylene to saltwater organisms

Zusammenfassung:Details are given of bio-assays to determine the acute toxicity of trichloroethylene (TCE) to several marine organisms, namely diatoms (Skeletonema costatum), shrimp (Mysidopsis bahia) and sheepshead minnows (Cyprinodon variegatus). The 96-h EC50 and LC50 for the various organisms in static unaerated seawater are tabulated, and the results are compared with those reported by other investigators for other species. In view of the rapid volatilization of TCE from water, it is stressed that the possible effects of solvents and temperature on the toxicity of this compound should be assessed.
