The Methanol Story: a Sustainable Fuel for the Future

The potential resource base for methanol as a transportation fuel is vast because it can be derived from any organic material. Experiences of Ford Motor Company with experimental methanol-fueled fleets are summarized, and the air quality impacts and fuel specifications of methanol are detailed. Infrastructure development and marketing challenges encountered are discussed. These obstacles, as well as those posed by overall costs, are also expected to affect development and deployment of fuel cell vehicles.
