Zusammenfassung: | The design and development of a hydrophyte treatment system in Bielkowo, Poland, are reviewed. The proposed system was implemented to help safeguard drinking water intake for the city of Gdansk against both surface and point sources of contaminants. The system comprises two primary subunits: a wet unit (pond) that is filled with water on a continuous basis, and a dry unit (an extension of the pond) that was designed for storm water. Dams made from medium-sized sand were created in the wet unit. The system was constructed in 1997. Following startup of the system, researchers documented significant improvements in water quality in the region. |
