Solar Energy Demonstration Zones in the Dalmation Region

Sectoral energy consumption is estimated for the Dalmation islands of Croatia, and prospects for solar energy contributions are explored. Many small hybrid plants for district heating and power supply, based on solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, offer capability to completely cover energy demand, 60% of which currently is provided by fossil fuels. Plans for the first solar demonstration project, to be sited on the island of Lastovo and involving a planned routist village, are detailed. A sustainable approach to regional energy supply is deemed appropriate to support the local economy and lifestyle.
