Zusammenfassung: | Various water resources experts provide commentary on a review of irrigation impacts from food production in developing countries. Food production in developing countries is not keeping up with demand, and must be increased mainly through additional irrigation agriculture. Irrigation water supply, salinization, soil erosion, and other social, political, cultural, and institutional hindrances to improving irrigation in developing countries are examined. Among the topics of discussion are globalization effects, technical leadership, social issues, sustainability, inappropriate international aid, holistic approaches to problem resolution, inappropriate (overly sophisticated) technology without adequate training, and economic flexibility. |
