Zusammenfassung: | Problems inherent in assuring the safety of radiation sources and the security of radioactive materials are addressed. Over 110 nations may have no minimum infrastructure to properly control radiation sources. In response, IAEA launched the Model Project in Radiation Protection to enhance radiation safety infrastructures in 52 nations. While adoption of IAEA Basic Safety Standards is deemed a necessary step, it is not sufficient. New initiatives are needed that are legally binding and applicable on an international scale. Measures now being developed will help states strengthen the safety and security of radiation sources and radioactive materials through emphasis on policies to upgrade national capabilities for effective regulation and control. |
