Zusammenfassung: | The background of the Chernobyl replacement project, which involves completion of two 1000 MW Russian-design nuclear power stations in the Ukraine, is summarized. Since 1993, proposals to complete these units have been central to negotiations between the west and Ukraine to agree to terms that allow early closure of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The justification under which the World Bank and the EC European Investment Bank made provisional loan allocations for the project subject to the outcome of a public participation process is outlined. Continued funding of the project is questioned in light of its high investment risk. |
