Olfactory sensitivity of Periplaneta cockroaches to functional group and molecular size of general odors

Zusammenfassung:1. 1. The length and number of segment were measured for adult male and female antennae of P. australasiae and P fuliginosa. 2. 2. The first EAG recordings were carried out for adult male and female of P australasiae and P. fuliginosa. 3. 3. As the odorous stimulants, monoterpenoids possessing diverse functional groups and linear alcohols, ketones and unsaturated compounds of various carbon chain length were used to elucidate selection of odors of the cockroaches. 4. 4. Prominent EAG responses were recorded in both sexes of both species to hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. 5. 5. Generally, C 7–C 9 besides C 13compounds gave strong EAG responses to the antennae of both species. 6. 6. The present morphological and EAG results were compared with those of P. americana and P. brunnea.
