Zusammenfassung: | Several species of bacteria were tested for ability to reduce various tetrazolium dyes. Rhizobium meliloti readily reduced diphenylthiazole tetrazolium (MTT) and common toxic chemicals inhibited the reduction. Therefore, this organism and dye were chosen for testing with 60 organic compounds, and 11 metal salts. Results were obtained in 20 minutes, and were comparable to results of other bioassays using bacteria. The rapidity and convenience of the system should make it acceptable for use in developing countries. |
