Environmental Accounting at Sulzer Technology Corporation

Sulzer Technology Corporation is active in a large number of international product markets. The implementation of an environmental accounting pilot project at Sulzer Hydro, Switzerland, is described, which was aimed at developing and testing new methods of environmental cost management in order to identify opportunities for environmental protection and potential cost cuts. The project was based on six steps: definition of the boundaries and choice of team, process definition, definition of environmental costs, physical and financial data collection, identification of environmental costs, and identification of possible cost savings. Each step is detailed.
