Zusammenfassung:	Human exposure to natural sources of ionising radiation has considerable significance. The radiation dose from basic background is a reliable reference for limiting public exposure to artificial sources. Extreme exposure to radon in the home are a matter of increasing concern to housing and health authorities. The exposures that occur in the UK and their consequences are described in this paper with notes on the radon action programme.
