Zusammenfassung:The size and distribution of endangered marsh deer populations in the Paran River marshlands, Brazil, were determined using aerial surveys. This region will be flooded in 1998 for construction and operation of a hydroelectric power plant. Aerial survey data from dry and flood seasons were analyzed using various methods, showing that the population is comprised of about 950 individuals-the second largest population for this species in Brazil. Rescue and translocation operations, favored by the public, have not been shown to be very successful. Acquisition of habitat where marsh deer already reside maybe a more cost effective strategy for preserving the deer.
