Phytotoxicity of methyl parathion with special reference to photosynthesis in wheat seedlings

Wheat seedlings were grown in the presence of 20 100 mu M methyl parathion to test the phytotoxic properties of the insecticide. Zusammenfassung:Wheat seedlings were grown in the presence of 20 100 mu M methyl parathion to test the phytotoxic properties of the insecticide. Methyl parathion inhibited root and shoot elongation in seedlings, an effect that increased with dose. The amount of photosynthetic pigments also decreased in treated plants, with the decrease in carotenoid content more pronounced than that of chlorophyll. A reduction in chlorophyll- beta indicates a sharp decline in the amount of light-harvesting chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of exposed seedlings.
