Zusammenfassung:	Cytological differences between two morphotypes of the rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, were investigated. Mitotic chromosomes of cells of the S and L types were obtained. The two species differed in chromosome number and morphology: the female diploid embryo of the S type had 25 chromosomes, while the L type exhibited 22 chromosomes. As far as the karyotypes indicate, the rotifers should be considered different species. Evolutionary processes of their morphological evolution are discussed.
