Polychlorinated biphenyl emissions to the atmosphere in the Great Lakes region. Municipal landfills and incinerators

Concentrations of PCBs in emissions from several municipal sanitary landfills and refuse and sewage sludge incinerators in the Great Lakes region were determined. An emissions projection was based on the amount of methane generated annually from landfills and a pcb:methane ratio of 0.3 MG of pcbs/cu M of methane found from landfills sampled. The annual PCB emissions from landfills in the U.S. is on the order of 10-100 kg/year. PCB concentrations from incinerator stacks sampled were in the 0.3-3 mg/cu M range.
