Training a Sensibility: Notes on American Art and Mass Media

With Bernice Abbot's 1932 exhibition of "Murals by American painters and photographers" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, she broached the problem of mass media through a new angle instead of considering it through artistic representation. Abbot referenced publishing and broadcast media. During this period, other filmmakers and artists also considered American art as a response to mass culture and media in the 20th century. Scholarship on this concept is discussed.
