Development and preliminary field testing of the Giemsa self-marker for the salt marsh mosquito Aedes sollicitans (Walker) (Dipter: Culicidae)
A one-step method for marking both larvae and adults of the salt marsh mosquito, Aedes sollicitans (Walker), is described. The technique is based on the blue biological stain Giemsa. In a 0.0001% aqueous solution, fourth instars become marked and develop into marked adults. Giemsa self-marking does...

Zusammenfassung: | A one-step method for marking both larvae and adults of the salt marsh mosquito, Aedes sollicitans (Walker), is described. The technique is based on the blue biological stain Giemsa. In a 0.0001% aqueous solution, fourth instars become marked and develop into marked adults. Giemsa self-marking does not appear to affect larvae or adults in any way. The blue self-marker is permanent and is detected in adults by a simple smear procedure. Preliminary tests showed that A. sollicitans adults could be self-marked and identified in the field. |
