Animal wastes management and characterization

Giving an extensive bibliography, the author reviews the characteristics and treatability of animal wastes and run-off from animal feedlots. It is pointed out that the effect of animal wastes on water quality is due largely to periodic slug discharges of pollutants, and possible methods of control are suggested. Run-off from feedlots can be readily controlled by the use of retention and evaporation ponds, properlocation of feedlots, and land disposal, and expensive waste treatment is probably unnecessary.
