Zusammenfassung: | Results are presented from laboratory and field experiments, using 3 species of trout, to determine whether or not aluminium accelerated net sodium loss in fish exposed to low pH values in soft water. The experiments showed that, in the absence of added chelating agents, ambient aluminium could account for severe body depletion of sodium at pH 5.0. The results were consistent with the hypothesis that high aluminium concentrations resulting from acidification caused by atmospheric deposition could cause fish mortalities by interfering with ion regulation. |
