Zusammenfassung: | Since 1945 the quality of surface waters in Illinois has been measured regularly, and recent data have shown an increase in nitrate concentration in some rivers. The highest nitrate concentrations occur in spring and early summer and are found in streams in areas of high agricultural production of small grains on fertile well-drained soils; in addition, nitrate concentrations tend to be higher in the headwaters of affected streams than in the lower reaches. |
