Water resource preservation by plainned recycling of treated waste water

The authors discuss the feasibility of integrating advanced waste-water treatment (AWT) processes with natural treatment processes to preserve water resources, using the Potomac river and Occoquan basins as examples. The proposed AWT plants for Montgomery County, Md., and the Upper Occoquan Sewage Authority in Fairfax County, Va., are described, with tables and diagrams; these plants will include biological, physical and chemical treatment plus natural purification in an effluent reservoir and in the receiving water. The quality of the effluents from the plants will be better than that of the Potomac river or the Occoquan reservoir.
