Zusammenfassung:Adult earthworms (Hippopera nigeriae) were exposed to dyestuff pollutants from the Kaduna river at concentrations of 0-100 per cent. The time to death was recorded. The numbers of worms dying increased with increasing concentration. Microscopic examination indicated that death followed copious mucous secretion coupled with thinning of the body and anoxaemia. The mechanisms involved in the toxic response are discussed and compared to those seen in fish.
