Zusammenfassung:	Although R. sphaeroides is widely used as an experimental organism for study of various aspects of bacterial photosynthesis, the properties of the neotype strain have never been described in the literature. The present study summarizes major characteristics of the neotype and nine other strains, and an approximation of the "biotype" of R. sphaeroides is proposed.
