Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of cellulose to ethanol using Penicillium funiculosum cellulase and free or immobilized Saccharomyces uvarum cells

The combined hydrolysis and fermentation of different celluloses using P. funiculosum cellulases and free S. cerevisiae cells has been reported from the authors' laboratory. The present communication discusses the compatibility of Penicillium funiculosum cellulase with Saccharomyces uvarum cells and the results on the combined hydrolysis and fermentation of cellulose to ethanol using a system of S. uvarum cells immobilized in an open pore gelatin matrix described earlier from the same laboratory.
