The Epithet Amukhlaios, the Place Name Amukhlai and the Syrian God Mikal

The present contribution deals with Amukhlaios, an epithet of Apollo based on the place name Amukhlai and attested from the 4th c. BC. The archaeological and philological evidence shows that Amukhlai is a derivative of Amukhlos the form under which the name of the old Syrian god Mikal was first adapted in Greek, and spread over the Greek world, together with his cult, probably in Late Mycenaean times.
