Zusammenfassung: | This review has several goals. First, since most of these direct rate measurements are scattered throughout the literature of microbial ecology and oceanography, it summarizes and consolidates the measurements so that comparisons between environments and studies can be made conveniently. Second, it compares the results of these direct rate measurements with those predicted by models. Third, it attempts to show the importance of various reactions to total sediment metabolism. Fourth, it presents some perspectives and insights on how future rate measurements should be conducted to insure ready comparison between studies and environments. |
