Corrosion of plain bearings in diesel engines

Corrosion may be caused by compounds that accumulate in the motor oil and that are chemically active with respect to the metal. In particular, the high level of temperature and load conditions of modern diesel operation and the use of high-sulfur fuels tend to intensify the processes of oil oxidation and contamination and the accumulation of corrosive products in the oil. Moreover, the breakdown of certain motor oil additives under the influence of high temperatures, mechanical working, and hydrolysis can also form corrosive products that may accelerate the chemical corrosion of bearing alloys.
