The collection underscores the role of the natural world as inspiration for European artists between 1785 and 1850, containing many examples of "plein air" paintings. Various genres are represented, and the heart of the collection consists of a group of paintings by northern European artists drawn to Rome in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
