Zusammenfassung: | A recent introduction into the French penitentiary system, Family Visit Units (UVF) are designed to offer detainees a place of intimacy within the sphere of the prison. The undertaking of such facilities is complex in what is essentially a space of surveillance by definition. Based on a socio-historic study of the creation of the family visit units and on an ethnographic field study, this article aims to explore these units under complementary methodological perspectives. It shows how the prison system has adopted the theme of 'maintaining family ties' in order to justify and control the units, thus moralizing and evacuating the embarrassing question of sexuality in prison.
