Zusammenfassung:An outline is given of the marine environment and fisheries in the Southwest Atlantic, FAO Statistical Area 41, which covers a total surface area of 17.65 million km super(2) off the east coast of Southe America between 05 degree 00'N and 60 degree 00'S. The variety and abundance of fishery resources and types of fisheries in this area are determined by a combination of physical and environmental characteristics. A profile of the catches is provided and an examination made of the resource status and fishery management in the area.
