Structural and functional characterization of neuropeptide Y in a primitive teleost, the Japanese eel ( Anguilla japonica )

Highlights ► The full-length cDNA encoding for Neuropeptide Y (NPY) was first cloned from the brain of Japanese eel ( Anguilla japonica ). ► Four days of food deprivation induced significant increase of NPY mRNA expression in the hypothalamus and optic tectum thalamus. ► The biological effects of Ja...

Zusammenfassung:Highlights ► The full-length cDNA encoding for Neuropeptide Y (NPY) was first cloned from the brain of Japanese eel ( Anguilla japonica ). ► Four days of food deprivation induced significant increase of NPY mRNA expression in the hypothalamus and optic tectum thalamus. ► The biological effects of Japanese eel NPY on the synthesis of hypothalamic mGnRH and pituitary hormone were investigated. ► Our studies demonstrated that NPY involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis, reproduction and HPT axis in the eel species.
