Zusammenfassung: | Early evidence demonstrates that there must have been an edition of Eusebius' Chronici Canones earlier than 325. Argues that it was written in 311, during the period of persecution that began in 303. This must change our entire view of the work and its purpose, together with that of the Historia Ecclesiastica, as both should be seen as a product of the persecution and its aftermath. Appendix 1 comments on two extant recensions of Eusebius' Martyrs of Palestine; Appendix 2 presents the Greek text, with English translation, of the beginning of Eusebius' preface to the Chronici Canones. |
