The Wigton church accounts, 1328-9: a translation into English

The Wigton church accounts, 1328-1329, are probably the earliest churchwarden's accounts in existence and are preserved at York; they give a vivid picture of a farming enterprise run for the Rector by his agent and assistants, but they are in mediaeval Latin. This article follows the transcribing and editing work of Dr Katharine M. Longley and translates them into English. The accounts are by John de Preston and include moneys received for flour sold through the lord Rector, from outside Wigton itself, altar moneys, expenses (necessities and church expenses), gardening account, carters' account, houses account, outdoor expenses, cash-payment accounts, purchase of meat and salt, purchases of livestock, spent on the official, spent on the lord Rector, hay and harvest account, and produce despatched from the new grange.
