Zusammenfassung: | Contests the attribution of a painting entitled "Judith with the Head of Holofernes", now held in the Banco Nazionale del Lavoro of Rome, to the northern Italian painter Lorenzo Lotto (c.1480-1556). Argues that the physical type of the Juno-like figure of Judith, her jewels, and particularly a bodice that draws attention to her full and aroused breasts, do not belong to a work that could have been painted by Lotto. Concludes by speculating that the work is by a minor follower of Caravaggio. (Quotes from original text) |
