Zusammenfassung: | The journalistic career in Boston of the Reverend Hazlitt during his American sojourn (1783–7) is known to scholars, but not in full. Ernest J. Moyne's edition of Margaret Hazlitt's journal listed only five articles by Hazlitt; a new survey of the relevant archives has revealed an additional six. The present article presents these eleven essays in context for the first time, analysing their contents, and pointing out those respects in which they may have influenced Hazlitt's son, particularly in such works as Political Essays and A Letter to William Gifford, Esq., both published 1819. It concludes with a listing of those articles composed by Hazlitt for publication in American journals and newspapers, 1784–5. |
