Framed by Bacchic celebration, three equally balanced Grecian adventures in Book 47 of Nonnus's "Dionysiaca" demonstrate different powers - civiliser, lover, warrior - of the triumphant Dionysus, the whole pivoted around a lament from the abandoned Ariadne. Fayant's introduction and annotation to her French edition in the Bude series demonstrate impeccable scholarship, covering source analysis, innovation and philological antecedent, tempered, however, perhaps even more than other volumes, with the conservatism characteristic of the series.
